Introduction to the “Signature’ Class”!

On this page we are going to explore the elegance of Holland America Line’s second of the “Signature Class” ships, the ms Nieuw Amsterdam IV. And I am sure that you, like the author has been astounded by her beauty and sheer elegance! The first “Signature Class” ship was the ms Eurodam, which was officially named on July 5, 2008 by HRH Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands, and she commenced her maiden cruise on that day.

ms Eurodam is the Nieuw Amsterdam’s identical sister, but their interiors are individual and different!

This new and fifteenth ship for the Holland America Line fleet is the superb ms Nieuw Amsterdam IV, was built by the famous Italian Fincantieri-Cantieri Navali Italiana S,p,A at the Marghera, Venice Italy. And as stated above she is the fourth ship to be honoured with this famous name, and in addition she is the 81st.ship to enter Holland America Line’s service from when this great Dutch Shipping Company commenced back in 1872. Nieuw Amsterdam has dynamic positioning abilities as she is powered by six diesel generators and propelled by Azipod propulsion technology.

Although she is 86,700-ton, amazingly she will only accommodate 2,106-guests in the ultimate of five star luxuries! Thus, although this magnificent new ship is large enough to offer a vast range of diverse amenities she will carry far fewer guests than all other ships of her size, because Holland America Line believes in the following principle when they designed their latest ship … “This is a refined ship and it is adorned with fine art and antiques, however, personal space is still the greatest luxury of all.”

Amidships rising from Main to Promenade Deck is the elegant Atrium

When the Nieuw Amsterdam was completed she sailed on her first set of sea trials on May 16, 2010, and she commenced her maiden voyage on July 4 for a 12-day Mediterranean cruise. Her official naming took place on July 4, and the ship was greatly honoured for Her Royal Highness Princess Maxima, wife of HRH Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, named her, and she is also the ship’s godmother.

After the Nieuw Amsterdam has operated a number of 12-day Mediterranean cruises she will cross the Atlantic and head for Florida and commence a series of seven-day eastern and western Caribbean itineraries from November through March 2011.

“Nieuw Amsterdam” is a Proud Holland America Name!

When Holland America decided on a name for this fine new ship, they decided to give her a name that has a long and a proud Holland America Line tradition going back to the first liner to carry that name SS Nieuw Amsterdam, which was launched in 1906. She was 17,149 tons and accommodated 686 passengers in First Class and 2,200 in Third Class. She sailed in regular service throughout World War I, and concluded service with HAL in 1932.

Then came the most famed liner of them all, SS Nieuw Amsterdam II joined the HAL fleet in 1938 as the company's flagship. Her silhouette can still be seen today behind Henry Hudson's Half Moon in the Holland America Line logo. At 36,287 tons she was known as “the Darling of the Dutch,” and she was decorated in great style. She was launched by Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. SS Nieuw Amsterdam II served proudly in World War II, completing 44 wartime voyages carrying some 400,000 troops and a few passengers. Following the war, she was rebuilt and, as the queen of Holland America Line’s “spotless fleet,” she hosted countless well-known figures among her guests, including Katherine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Spencer Tracey and Albert Schweitzer. This ship is still recognised today as the most beautiful looking liner ever built, with her long flowing well proportioned lines, and her two stately funnels and masts!

SS Nieuw Amsterdam II built in 1938 - “The Darling of the Dutch”

The 33,900-ton ms Nieuw Amsterdam III was launched in 1983 and she was considered as one of the most elegant ships of her time. Nieuw Amsterdam III sailed in Alaska in the northern summers and the Caribbean in the winters. She was blessed with countless innovative designs and guest offerings, but with new and somewhat larger ships being built she was sold, but continues to sail to this day! ms Nieuw Amsterdam IV will continue the proud tradition of her name and continue to evolve Holland America Line's sophisticated mid-sized ships.

Dinning on board:

The dinning experience on every single Holland America Line ship in reality simply cannot be faulted, and to be honest, if anyone complains, well they either made the wrong choice of menu, or they just are not used to high quality cuisine of the highest order, which is presented in the most superior manner and dishes! As the author has sailed on a number of HAL ships and most recently on the ms Oosterdam in February 2013, all I can say that dinning in the Main (Vista) Dining Room was 9.5 out of 10, whilst our experiences at the Pinnacle Grill was indeed a full 10 out of 10!

Master Chef Rudi Sodamin is the author of numerous internationally published cookbooks, including “Seduction & Spice” (2000) and Holland America Line’s

“A Taste of Excellence” (2007), “A Taste of Elegance” (2009) and “A Taste of Celebration” (2010). All books are published by Rizzoli

Holland America Line has its very own “Culinary Council,” which comprises, not of just one Head Chef, as you would find on every other cruise line, but Holland America Line has its own hard working team of six Master Chefs on its “Culinary Council,” who not only create superb recipes that are featured in all the dining ventures onboard all of HAL’s 15 ships, but also ensure the exacting standards that HAL have set for a hundred years and that has made this company’s cuisine so famous for its excellence and thus it has won countless awards over the years!

Master Chef Rudi Sodamin was once again named Best Cruise Line Chef by Porthole Cruise Magazine. One of the world’s leading cruise travel publications, Porthole. “Chef Sodamin’s talent is legendary,” said Editor-in-Chief Bill Panoff. “Year after year Chef Sodamin continues to be the most innovative and inspiring chef in the cruise industry. Always looking to elevate the culinary experience for cruise guests, Rudi’s leadership and mentorship of chefs has expanded the many possibilities for gourmet cuisine at sea.” Chef Rudi has won this award and others years and years in a row, and obviously, there is a very good reason for this, Holland America offers the very best cuisine at sea!

How does the author rate this ship?

I would like to sum up my thoughts on the ms Nieuw Amsterdam IV. This incredible new ship has set the kind of standard in cruise ships that is so high that all ships in the future should attempt to match her! However, I am aware that this will be a big ask, for Holland America Line has a knack and a speciality and flair that is renowned worldwide and thus it the Cruise Company that has won more awards than any other cruise company, and has done so many years in a row!

Below are just a few of the Awards and Accolades handed to Holland America Line – and they deserve it!:

“The Highest Rated Cruise Line” Conde Nast Travellers Readers; Choice Travellers Awards; Travel & Leisure Word’s Best Awards.

“Best Overall Cruise Value” – 20 consecutive years – World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society.

“High Deluxe Five Star Rating” - World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society.

“International Five Star Diamond Award” – The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences.

“Cruise Line with the Highest Client Satisfaction” TravelAge West.

In 2010 Holland America received the following awards - “Best Cruise Operator” and “World’s leading GREEN Cruise Line.

“Best Cruise Operator” (Internationally based) - AFTA award 2010 AFTA (Australian Federation of Travel Agents) National Travel Industry Awards.

“Gold 2010 Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Environmental Protection Award” - from the U.S. Coast Guard.

“World’s Leading Green Cruise Line Award” and the “Blue Circle Award” - from the Port of Vancouver.

And the above are just a very small list of the countless awards the this Company has received!

In Conclusion:

ms Nieuw Amsterdam will continue all the much-admired Holland America Line features, including the outside view, glass elevators located amidships, the Explorations Café, a Cyber-Coffee House powered by The New York Times, the Pinnacle Grill and Pinnacle Bar, the innovative Culinary Arts Centre presented by Food & Wine Magazine, where culinary experts provide cooking demonstrations and intimate classes in a state-of-the-art onboard show kitchens, an expanded Greenhouse Spa and Salon with thermal suites and hydro-pool, the largest gymnasium ever built for Holland America Line, and a youth facility that includes the teens-only Loft. In addition the ship features a family-style Canaletto's Italian restaurant. And the list just goes on!

ms Nieuw Amsterdam has 11 passenger decks and staterooms that will spotlight all the “Signature of Excellence” premium amenities. Also featured are innovative “Spa Staterooms” that offer additional spa amenities.

This it is the author’s opinion that the Nieuw Amsterdam will be a popular to sail on by the a somewhat more younger set and that she is worth going to the USA, or to Europe for when she spends the summer months there. Possibly one day she may even visit to Australia and New Zealand on a Grand Word Cruise and then you can book a longer voyage on her! However, the traditional Holland America cruisers will always prefer the HAL mid-sized ships, such as the four S-Class, being the ms Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam and the Veendam, these ships are around 55,000 tons and accommodate 1,200 passengers. Then there are the four R-Class, being the ms Rotterdam, Volendam, Zaandam and the Amsterdam which are around 60,000 tons, accommodating 1,400 passengers. The author having sailed on the Vista class ms Oosterdam recently, found that the ship had beautiful interiors, but for me was somewhat to large to my personal liking and more passengers of course! Thus, I do prefer the smaller ships, but not everybody is like me who also has problems walking these days and these new ships do seem very long, but these new luxurious ships are grandiose to say the least!

The elegant ms Nieuw Amsterdam

This incredible ship that has set a new high standard that all other ships in the future should attempt to match!
