MV Athena was originally a famed Scandinavian Classic Liner

Athena history in short:

Originally named MS Stockholm, she was a solid Swedish built ship, however at the time she was considered to be rather too small for a Trans-Atlantic liner being just 11,700-tons, thus did not prove to be very successful as an Atlantic liner. However, due to her intimate size and her elegant design she did prove to be very popular as a cruise ship with Americans, but sadly she was never a great financial success for the Swedish America Line. Eventually she was sold to East Germany to the Trade Union who converted her into a full time cruise ship. She was sold again and temporarily became an accommodation ship. However in 1994 an Italian company purchased this fine classic ship and they decided to strip her right down to her strong ice strengthened steel hull, and superstructure was completely rebuilt into a premium rated contemporary cruise ship. She was renamed; “Italia Prima.” Upon completion the now luxurious fully stabilised ship had also been fitted with a large “Duck Tail” at her stern to further improve her speed and stability and soon she commenced cruising with great success! My MS Stockholm page on ssmaritime.com has her complete story – the link is at the bottom of this page.

As you step inside the MV Athena you would never think that you are entering a ship that was once a Trans Atlantic liner, for it is obvious that she looks so fresh and as modern as tomorrow, and all this is due to the ongoing refits and the superb maintenance that is constantly undertaken by Classic International Cruises.

When she was rebuilt in 1994 as a cruise ship it was obvious that this classic liner had become very much like a brand new ship, in addition she had an attractive new profile and superb luxurious facilities including suites with private balconies. It would not be long before she became a very popular cruise ship sailing the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the world. Then name MV Italia Prima, she visited Australia in 1997 and at the time the author spent some time on board this fine ship and found her to be a superb 4 star cruise ship! Speaking to her passengers at the time, they all loved this wonderful ship and all had nothing but praise for her, especially her excellent range of lounges and spacious cabins.

Years later she was renamed MV Athena and Classic International Cruises obtained her in 2005 and gave her another refit, making what was already a superb ship even better! MV Athena complies with the very latest safety regulations such as SOLAS 2010 and is fully equipped with the finest navigational and safety equipment available on the seven seas!

By today’s standards the Athena is considered to be a medium, or even a small size cruise ship at 16,144-tons, however that is a great advantage in comparison to those giants that now sail the seas with 2,300 to 6,000 passengers, for Athena has a rather select number of passengers of just 550 guests, thus you will never stand in a long queue when visiting a port wanting to get off the ship or entering the show lounge, etc. Athena offers a wide selection of beautifully appointed public lounges and comfortable cabin accommodations spanning eight passenger decks, which are serviced by two lifts. MV Athena has satellite communications service available for phone, fax as well as internet facilities.

Accommodations on the Athena

All accommodation images were provided by “Classic International Cruises” Australia

The majority of cabins have a sea view, however all cabins have private facilities having both a bath tub and shower. There is a television for satellite programmes and in house movies, a phone for in house and international calls, a fridge and a mini bar facility. In addition there is a hairdryer and a personal safe. There is a selection of twin-bedded and double-bedded cabins. The more luxurious mini suites and spacious balcony suites have the added benefit of Jacuzzis as well as a DVD Player. A limited number of cabins also have extra upper foldaway pullman berths or a sofa bed. The images below provide an overall idea of various grades, but it is certainly not a complete listing of grades available.

Balcony Suite – Cat 11 - Navigators Deck

Junior Suite – Cat 10 –Mediterranean & Navigators Decks

Deluxe Twin – Cat 7 – Mediterranean Deck (third berth available)

Classic outside Twin – Cat 6 – Promenade or Navigator Decks

Standard Outside Twin – Cat 4 - Pacific, Atlantic Decks

Standard inside Twin – 3/4 berth – Cat 2 - Atlantic, Mediterranean, Promenade, Navigators Decks

Considering that this is the second cheapest cabin on the ship, all I can say, pretty good!

Storage space in all cabins is excellent for the Athena was conceived to be able operate for around the world voyages and as mentioned earlier, she has already visited Australia in the nineties. You will have enough room for all your belongings, and there is a personal safe in every cabin, no matter if you are on a short “Weekend cruise” or an extended “Line voyage” to or from Europe, the accommodations are simply excellent regardless the grade you choose.

As is well known to the Western Australian cruise public, Classic International Cruises has become famed for its great “Value for Money Cruising” and cruising on their larger flagship, the Athena is no exception!

The author is currently planning to sail on Athena from Fremantle to the UK in March 2011.
