NEW - Classic International Cruises - MV Athena - Feature

Part 1: Cruise Ships based in (or cruising from) Australia

P&O Cruises Australia

Pacific Dawn                                 Australia’s new super cruise liner will depart on her maiden cruise from Sydney on October 26, 2007. She will be the largest cruise ship permanently based in Australia.

Pacific Sun                                          Pacific Sun is currently based in Sydney, but will be relocated in Brisbane as of November 17, 2007. when Pacific Star commences new duties.

P&O/Carnival News Updates        All the latest from Carnival Corporation & plc, which includes; P&O Cruises UK, P&O Cruises Australia, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, Cunard Line & Costa Cruises.

Princess Cruises

Sun Princess                                One of Princess “superliners” is Heading Downunder in 2007. She will replace the popular smaller Pacific Princess

Dawn Princess                             Dawn Princess the darling of the Princess Cruise fleet.

Classic International Cruises

Athena                                        MV Athena is Classic International Cruises flagship and she is the Gem of the fleet. She will take over Funchal’s scheduled programme to Australia for 2008/2009 and undertake a line voyage from Europe to Fremantle (Perth) and commence the Australian Summer series of cruises, which includes a number of new departures out of Adelaide. She is a magnificent ship indeed and was built in 1948 as the Swedish America Line, Trans-Atlantic liner, MS Stockholm. She was completely rebuilt in 1994 into a brand new cruise ship with only her solid steel ice strengthened hull surviving. Athena is the ultimate classic cruise ship! Also visit the author’s article - MS Stockholm on ssmaritime.com.

Funchal                                     CIC has cancelled Funchal’s 2008/09 Australian season and replaced her with their flagship MV Athena. A delightful classic Portuguese cruise ship, full of charm, good food, excellent service, and value! This link contains my 2008 review of the ship and a deck by deck photographic tour. Review is based on a tour of the ship undertaken in Singapore March 14, 2008. Having spoken to many passengers, they rate this ship very highly, especially as this is a low cost cruise line! Funchal has cruised in Australian waters for many years. Hopefully she will return for then 2009/2010 summer season! Also visit the author’s article - SS Funchal on ssmaritime.com.

Princess Daphne                          CIC has cancelled Princess Daphne’s 2008/09 maiden Australian East Coast season. The classic Princess Daphne owned by CIC has received a comprehensive refit in 2008, and w due to head for Australia in 2008, but this venture was cancelled due to the “skyrocketing fuel prices” according Mr. Grant Hunter, Managing Director of CIC Australia. Hopefully, she may head for Australia one day! Princes Daphne was built as the Port Sydney. Also visit the author’s article - Port Sydney on ssmaritime.com.

P&O Cruises UK

Aurora                                         Aurora 2006 Cruise Reivew. Having sailed on her maiden world cruise, there is no doubt that Aurora is the perfect cruise ship. (Located on our Cruise-Australia site)

Oriana                                         2005 World Cruise review. The author sailed on Oriana for 42 days, from Brisbane Australia to Southampton UK. The review includes 162 photographs of all lounges, facilities and decks spaces. Enjoy! Please Note: The author sailed on Oriana this February (2008) 50 nights from Brisbane to Southampton and is due to write a new review. However, maintenance, food and entertainment has sadly deteriorated badly since my last cruise on her in 2005 and Aurora in 2006. Very sad! I have been a big supporter of P&O, but at this moment I would not contemplate cruising with P&O UK ever again! I have had countless P&O UK cruises and this cruise has been a massive disappointment, and I am not one who easily complains!

Artemis                                                 P&O’s smaller member of the fleet.

Arcadia                                        She was built to become the Cunard MV Queen Victoria, but instead she became Arcadia, slightly smaller than nthe new QV, but externally almost identical. Later in 2008, up to 80 cabins will be added to the ship, making this ship that is called “the sheep carrier” by many around the world, just like Queen Victoria, even uglier!

Cunard Line

Queen Mary 2                              The Grand Queen of the Sea – Includes a comprehensive photo album.

Queen Victoria                            She is slightly larger that P&O’s UK Arcadia, but just as ugly looking. She is just another Carnival Vista Class ship just like those of Carnival, Holland America & Costa Cruises. She is unattractive, but very nice inside and makes a good hotel and that is what she is, a hotel, and she is already reputed as a shocker in rough waters!

Seabourn Cruises

Seabourn Yachts                          The intimate and luxurious cruise Line for those who demand nothing than the best!

Ex Arcadia                                    This fine ship sailed for a short time as the P&O Arcadia. She was previously the Star Princess and is again sailing under a new guise. (Cruise Review)

Royal Caribbean Fleet (RCI)          Currently RCI operate 19 magnificent ships, ranging from 48,563 ton Empress of the Seas to the massive 158,000 ton Freedom of the Seas

She is 339 metres long and 38.6 metres wide and will accommodate 5,740 passengers and crew. This massive ship will be handed over to Royal Caribbean in April 2006. with two further ships in the series are due to be delivered in 2007 and 2008. Thus, as she is now in the water, she officially becomes the largest passenger ship afloat.

Celebrity Cruises                            Celebrity Cruises is famed for their superb service as they cruise worldwide. Now MV Mercury comes Down Under in the summer of 2007 and 2008

MSC Cruises                                           Cruise with an Italian flair (Special Fly/cruise options from Australia)

MS Regal Empress                       IMC - Imperial Majesty’s Classic Cruise Liner (ex Greek Atlantic Liner TSS Olympia) operates 2 night mini cruises to Nassau in the Bahamas.

SS Aegean two                            Golden Sun Cruises operates the once famous classic Italian liner SS Ausonia although she is now named “Aegean two.”  This ship is a gleaning gem and is one of the best maintained ships anywhere and the finest examples of her kind left in the world. She operates short3 and 4 night cruises out of Piraeus to the all the popular Greek Islands as well as Turkey. I highly recommend you experience the SS Aegean two, let alone the magnificent destinations she visits!

MS Ocean Odyssey …                        The delightful Ocean Odyssey sails out of Goa and Cochin cruising exotic Indian Ocean Islands and Sri Lanka. These voyages are popular with the English public as well as American, Australian and New Zealand holidaymakers.

MS Kristina Regina                         This is a magnificent two funnelled Scandinavian cruise ship that is really worth seeking out. Built as the very last passenger steamship built in Scandinavia, she was rebuilt as a motor ship by Kristina Cruises in 1987 and is one of the best kept classic ships in the world today. Her delightful interiors captures the very best of Finnish and Scandinavian maritime décor!

Galapagos Voyages                      Galapagos Voyages operate expedition voyages around the Galapagos Islands, a land that embraces a world of timelessness. The Galapagos offers a multitude of wildlife and scenic wonders. A cruise on MV Santa Cruz or Isabella 2 is a MUST DO experience for all who are looking for a new and exciting destination!

MS Royal Star ...                                     The delightful classic MS Royal Star is owned and operated by the Swiss-owned “African Safari Club.” She currently cruises out of Mombassa to the “Paradise Islands” of the Indian Ocean. This feature is located on our ssMaritime.com Site.

Star & NCL Cruises                          Cruise-Australia has officially banned all companies owned by the Malaysian “Genting Casino” group, being Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), and NCL America. NCL Cruises has recently been found guilty for “negligent operation of a cruise ship and for the 8 deaths and 10 serious injuries of crew members onboard the SS Norway. This Casino based company has a lot to answer for! Do NOT cruise with NCL / NCL America, both who are in severe financial difficulties and Star Cruises. They are selling off ships attempting to survive, but I predict that as they are the only cruise company loosing money, they will eventually disappear, and so they should. Don’t get caught!
