At 160,000-tons these ships were the largest until the arrival in 2009

of the 220,000-ton Oasis of the Seas the largest cruise ships afloat

MV Freedom of the Seas

The 160,000 GRT (ton) Royal Caribbean International super cruise ship, Freedom of the Seas was floated out at “Aker Finnyard” Finland on Friday August 19. She is 339 meters long and 38.6 meters wide and she accommodates 4,370 passengers and has 1,370 crew. This massive ship was handed over to Royal Caribbean in April 2006. Her sister the Liberty of the Seas was delivered in May 2007 whilst the third in the series is due in 2008. This trio are certainly big ships and they were the first to beat Carnival’s attempt with Cunard's Queen Mary 2. However, RCI have now launched the massive 220,000-tom MV Oasis of the Seas, which will not be soon outdone by anyone!

View a YouTube video of Freedom of the Seas visit to Southampton.

Royal Caribbean International ordered two new 220,000-ton ships that will have a maximum (using all berths) passenger capacity of 6,400 passengers, or 5,400 (based on twin bedded configuration). These ships will be the largest passenger ships to be built in history. Measurements are as follows: Length: 1,180ft (360m). Width: 154ft (47m). Height: 240ft (65m). Draft of 30ft (9+m). And the question begs will Carnival try to beat it in due course? Oasis of the seas, the first of the series was built by the Norwegian shipbuilder Aker Yards and Oasis of the Seas will begin her inaugural season on December 12, 2009, with 19 consecutive 7-night sailings to the Eastern Caribbean, with ports of call at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and Nassau, Bahamas.

Freedom / Liberty of the Seas

In the meantime, the magnificent Freedom and the Liberty of the Seas is here to provide the cruise experience of a lifetime and lets focus on these fine ships now! We commence with a photo gallery combined with a few comments.

A massive sight indeed as we see her head on!

The Grand Galleria

The Café & Pizzaria

The Baber Shop on the Gallery

The Grand multi level Dinning Room

The combined pool area is 43 percent larger than those on RCI’s Voyager-class ships. Providing passengers three distinctive spaces to splash, be it in the family pool area, or relax in the adults-only Solarium and Spa’s, or soak in the sun at the main pool.

H2O Zone – the pool that has everything for the kids!

One of the most spectacular spaces on these massive ships will be H2O Zone, the farthest aft of the three areas. H2O Zone is a colourful wonderland of large, brightly hued sculptures doubling as interactive fountains that spray, sprinkle and spurt water in every direction. The oversized sculptures depict family members of all shapes and sizes, including the family dog, and give guests numerous ways to get soaked – and soak each other, by turning wheels, setting off sensors and dodging dumping buckets. The sculptures will be spread throughout a large, central wading area that also will include a number of spray cannons, water jets and ground gushers.

In one corner of the water playground, a circular pool will shoot a current of water in a river around a central island. Guests can float with the flow as they are misted by one of the fountain sculptures. Next to the circular pool, a shallow pool, fed by a flamingo-shaped fountain, will create a secluded space for the ship’s youngest cruisers. At the back of the park, a rectangular swimming pool will be flanked by wading areas and fed by a waterfall cascading from an overhanging bridge. At night, the water park will turn into a dramatically lit sculpture garden.

Above & below: The Solarium and Hot Tubs

Two Hot Tubs hang 12ft over each side of the ship

One of the three pools will be in the adults-only solarium forward of the ship. This pool will feature underwater music and has a window looking down into the forward atrium. The solarium also features two large hot tubs cantilevered out 12 feet from the side of the ship. Suspended 112 feet above the ocean, the hot tubs will offer breathtaking, panoramic views

The hanging Hot Tubs

Another first for Royal Caribbean is will be a sports pool where guests can indulge in a variety of water sports located n the main pool area. At night, the main pool area will transform into an open-air nightclub, with a large dance floor situated between the two pools. Guests will be able to enjoy live music, themed parties and a top-class club DJ.

The name Freedom and Liberty of the Seas was chosen deliberately to convey the enormity of features and amenities offered on these extraordinary ships, as they are really about freedom of choice, and the liberty to explore, a freedom to relax, having a liberty to make one's own vacation plans reflective of one's own tastes and interests.

There are accommodations to suit every pocket, from value for money inside and outside cabins, to balcony rooms and staterooms as well as grand suites. Each cabin has flat-screen TV.
